Andy Kaufman: I'm From Hollywood
Andy Kaufman: I'm From Hollywood
Why Andy Kaufman abandoned his Hollywood lifestyle to become a professional wrestler remains a mystery even today. Friends Marliu Henner and Tony Danza recall it was impossible to tell whether it was all an act or true obsession. One thing for sure: wrestling dragged Andy into an abyss he was unable to climb out of. Initially, Kaufman wrestled women only, but that would change one fateful day in Memphis, Tennessee. Andy and a hulking gal named Foxy were halfway through their highly touted rematch, Kaufman had her pinned, but that wasn't enough. He decided to rub her face into the sweaty mat. That's more than Foxy's trainer, professional wrestler Jerry "The King" Lawler, could stand and he body-slammed Kaufman, sending him to a local hospital on a stretcher. From that day forth, Andy began his campaign of revenge against Lawler. For Andy, Lawler and all of Tennessee became a target of ridicule. Kaufman began broadcasting on local television. He explained to the hicks how to speak proper English, showed them how to use soap, and told women to shave their armpits. Andy made bizarre videos, put out a $5,000 bounty on Lawler's head, and even went on national TV to tell his dark tale. "I'm From Hollywood" chronicles all this graphic detail-wrestling matches, shouting matches, Lawler blowing fire into Andy's face, and more. Bonus Movie: "My Breakfast With Blassie" Comic genius Andy Kaufman hops a Hollywood bus to visit and eat breakfast with his old friend, Freddie Blassie, self-proclaimed King of Men and professional wrestler. Donning a painfully restrictive neck brace-Kaufman had been body-slammed on the David Letterman show by Southern heavyweight champion Jerry Lawler-Andy and his guest discuss wrestling, stardom, hygiene, and whether to eat bacon or sausage. Keep your eyes open for a special appearance by Comic Relief founder Bob Zmuda.
